Tremont Considers Starting a Municipal Shellfish Program

DMR Water Quality map of Tremont.

The town of Tremont on Mount Desert Island is considering forming a Shellfish Committee to manage the town’s shellfish resources at the town level. According to the Mount Desert Islander, the town’s Harbor Committee decided to invite theĀ  DMR Area Biologist to their Jue 29 meeting to outline the steps to creating a Shellfish Program, which include drafting an Ordinance and convening a volunteer town Shellfish Committee to oversee the program. The process takes a couple of months to a year, and would need to be initiated by the town’s Board of Selectmen.

Tremont is currently the only town on Mount Desert Island without a Municipal Shellfish Warden.
